Prof. Cheng Yu Performs at 80th Anniversary Concert of the Victory of the Anti-Fascist War

On 11 October 2025, a commemorative concert marking the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the World Anti-Fascist War and the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression was held at St John’s Waterloo, London.

The event, hosted by the London Chinese Philharmonic Choir, received strong support from the Chinese Embassy in the UK and members of the Chinese community. The church was filled to capacity, with warm applause and heartfelt emotion throughout the evening.

The programme featured a blend of Chinese and Western works, highlighted by the monumental Yellow River Cantata (黄河大合唱) by Xian Xinghai.

Prof Cheng Yu, renowned pipa virtuoso and ethnomusicologist, presented a pipa, piano and narration performance of the third movement “The Yellow River Flows from Heaven” (黄河之水天上来). This marked her fourth performance of the Yellow River Cantata in the UK, offering audiences a deeply moving interpretation of this historic masterpiece. The concert celebrated both musical artistry and remembrance, honouring the enduring spirit of peace and resilience shared across generations.
